Huawei Mate X: An Impressive Foldable Smartphone

In MWC 2019, Huawei officially introduced its first foldable smartphone, called Huawei Mate X. The phone is shaping up to be the foldable phone, fixing a lot of concerns over the yet-to-be-released Samsung Galaxy Fold.

However, there is one thing you should note that is Huawei Mate X’s price, which will be expensive. This foldable smartphone costs €2,299 ($2,605, £1,996, AU$4,769) for 512GB ROM and 8GB RAM variant. According to Huawei’s CEO, the company has been in the work for nearly three years to make this phone and it would be launched in the UK through EE, Three, and Vodafone carriers in the next few months.

While there will be a number of foldable smartphones introduced at MWC 2019, Huawei Mate X is claimed to be the fastest foldable 5G phone in the world. Here is a detail look about the new Huawei Mate X foldable smartphone.

A foldable 8-inch screen

The new Mate X folds out into an 8-inch tablet, including a 6.6-inch screen on a side and a 6.4-inch screen size on the other when it’s folded up.

This OLED display is bigger than Samsung’s Fold screen, which is a 7.4-inch unfolded panel with a folded 4.6-inch bezel-heavy screen on a side.

When unfolding the Huawei Mate X, you will not see any notch like 2018 iPhone models, or corner cutout for the front-facing camera like the Galaxy S10 lineup. Huawei’s Mate X has a bezel-thinner FullView display.

The way this phone fold is also different. When folding, the 8-inch screen will split into two, and the broken-down displays will face the outside, while Samsung Galaxy Fold phone folds inward, only with a small outer screen.

Huawei Mate X: Dimensions & Grips

Regarding Huawei, the company calls the Mate X’s folding hinge the Falcon Wing hinge, allowing the phone to be completely flat, and it measures only at 5.4mm thin. Huawei said that there were 100 components inside of the hinge.

For a comparison with Apple iPad, this new Huawei Mate X foldable phone is much thinner when laid out in the tablet.

A prominent grip on the phone, called by Huawei, is an ‘ergonomic curvature’, which will be firm, secure holding in the user’s hand. The grip is also for another good purpose that is to store other major components. You will see a camera system, a fingerprint sensor embedded the power button in here.

The Huawei Mate X will go on sale with Interstellar Blue color, but it only appears on the top and bottom, as well as the unfolded back. There is also a case on top to protect the 8-inch screen. It will be great if the case is available for free.

Huawei Mate X: Specs and battery life

Huawei proudly claimed that its Mate X would be the word fastest foldable 5G smartphone, and it’s not a claim as to how fast you unfold and fold the thing. According to Huawei, “5G is on” in the latest Kirin 980 chipset, while the Samsung Galaxy Fold will start with a 4G LTE at the lofty starting price. The Korean company didn’t mention the price of the 5G variant.

Huawei Mate X is the first smartphone, equipped a 7nm 5G chip and flaunting a quad 5G antenna design, which can reach up to 4.6Gbps at speed. A 1GB movie can be downloaded just in three seconds, says the Chinese company.

Huawei Mate X will pack with 512GB of internal memory, 8GB of RAM, and a Nano memory card support. In terms of battery, since it features a large 8-inch screen size, the phone is powered by a massive 4,500mAh one. The Mate X seems to be broken up into two parts like Samsung the Galaxy Fold.

Huawei Mate X has a bigger battery capacity than Galaxy Fold’s one, but its screen is larger, so it even outs. The Huawei Mate X also break a record for charging. With Huawei’s 55W SuperCharge tech, the phone can get 85% battery life just in 30 minutes of charging.

Huawei Mate X: The camera system

Although Huawei didn’t go into detail the cameras on its Huawei Mate X, you can see its camera system in the spin hinge, ending up with a USB-C charging port at the bottom.

The idea to put the camera system on the Huawei Mate X is optionally impressive. You can easily see yourself when taking a selfie using the main camera, and you will not need to select between better rear camera and the lower-megapixel front-facing camera.

When someone else is taking a photo for you, you can also adjust your hair, clothes through a live view screen. With the 6.6-inch screen, you can see everything on the 6.4-inch side.

Huawei Mate X: price and release date

Huawei is usually known for a cheaper price with its flagships over Samsung, Apple, and other top-tier smartphone manufacturers. However, the Galaxy Mate X this time will be more expensive than the $2,000 Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Obviously, the tech is expensive, and the fact that the new 5G is also pricey. But, Huawei needs to make its software good enough or even better than Samsung’s so that multi-tasking can be as easy as possible in the tablet mode.

There is still no word about the official release date if Huawei Mate X. The Samsung Fold will be available on April 26, so the high chance Huawei will be itching to compete with the Galaxy foldable phone sooner than later this year.

We are glad to know whether you can purchase the phone in the US, where Huawei cannot sell the phone due to government pressure.
