How to fix iPhone XR that keeps lagging

We rarely see a powerful smartphone run into performance issues at an early stage. However, there are still a number of factors that make this happen and it even occurs with your new iPhone as well. Memory problems are usually the main reason when the memory space runs low. In new devices, performance issues are usually related to software errors such as rogue apps, bad updates, system bugs.

A device may even get sluggish or freezing due to hardware damage in the worst case. Before taking your iPhone to a service center, you can first try the highlighted solutions below to resolve the software-related error. Find out what to do if your new iPhone XR suddenly lags or gets unresponsive.

Solution 1: Clear all background apps on your iPhone

Corrupted files or rogue apps are often the main causes of performance issues. If one of your apps on your phone is acting up, the system functions will be affected. Additionally, background apps are the culprits. To rule out the problem, you should clear all background apps. To do so:

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of your screen and pause it a second.
  2. Swipe right or left to scroll through app previews.
  3. Finally, swipe up on each app preview to close it.

After you clear all background apps, you can load apps and check if the problem is already gone. If it still lags or freezes, you should move on to other possible triggers.

Solution 2: Restart or force restart your iPhone XR

A simple reboot on your iPhone XR is a good solution to clear out junk files from your phone memory, including the corrupted temporary files. Cached files might trigger adverse symptoms and then affect the overall performance of your phone. To rule them out, you can restart your iPhone XR by following these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Power button along with one of two Volume buttons
  2. When you see the Slide to Power Off command, release them
  3. Drag the slider to the right.
  4. After 1 minute, press and hold the Power button again until your iPhone boots up.

If your iPhone XR is still not responding, a simple restart is not possible. In this case, you should perform a factory restart on your iPhone XR. This method works the same as a simple restart when it comes to clearing cache and apps. For newbies, here’s how to perform a force restart on your iPhone XR:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Do the same with the Volume Down button.
  3. Press the Power button and then release it when your phone boots up.

Wait until your iPhone boots up as it as you normally do. If it still lags and freezes, you are encountering more complex issues.

Solution 3: Install pending updates for apps and iOS system

Another solution to fix system issues can be found in new updates. If bad apps are the underlying cause, updating your apps can fix the problem. To manually install pending app updates on your iPhone, simply do the following steps:

  1. Launch the App Store and tap on Updates
  2. Scroll through the list of apps with pending updates.
  3. To update individual apps, simply tap on Update button next to each one.
  4. If you want to install multiple app updates at once, tap on Update All  This button is only visible if several app updates are available.

You should also update your iPhone to the latest iOS version if it’s available. Similar to app updates, iOS firmware updates also comes with bug fixes. It might be the key to getting rid of performance issues if bugs are the main culprits. To install a new iOS update on your iPhone XR, just do the following steps:

  1. Open Settings app from the Home screen.
  2. Tap on General > Software Update.

If there is an update available, you will see a notification with the details of the update with the “download and install” option. Before updating your phone, make sure to back up all your important data through iCloud or iTunes for safekeeping.

Solution 4: Reset all settings on your iPhone XR

If the symptoms only acted up after you customized your iPhone settings, then there’s a chance that the problem is caused by incorrect settings. However, tracing and identifying the error is quite difficult. So, to make things easier, you can consider the “reset all settings” option on your iPhone XR. The process will erase all customized settings on your iPhone and then restore default options. Settings errors will be eliminated. To do so:

  1. Open Settings app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on General > Reset.
  3. Choose Reset all settings option
  4. When prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
  5. Tap on the popup to confirm a settings reset.

Once the process is done, your phone will restart itself. After that, you can enable individual features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Solution 5: Factory reset your iPhone XR

A factory reset can be the last options if the problem still persists after you attempt all prior methods. To clear out system errors, you can reset and then restore your iPhone XR to the factory default settings. Follow these steps below to carry it out through the settings menu:

  1. From the Home screen, head to Settings.
  2. Tap on General > Reset.
  3. Select the Erase all content and settings option
  4. When prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
  5. Tap on the popup again to confirm a factory reset.

If you cannot perform a factory reset directly in settings of your iPhone since the screen is unresponsive, you can use iTunes to restore your iPhone XR instead. You can use a Windows PC or Mac computer with the latest version of iTunes installed. Aside part from a factory reset, you can use iTunes to restore your iPhone in recovery mode or boot your phone into DFU mode to repair corrupted OS.
