On Windows 10, aside from checking logical errors and other issues on a hard drive, it’s also a great idea to check whether the HDD drive or SSD drive on your Windows computer is still reliable to prevent unwanted hardware failure.

However, a downside is that Windows 10 does not have a mechanism to check the current status of the hard drive. But, it does not mean it’s impossible. There are still a few tools like Command Prompt or Monitor. This can help you access info from Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) to check if your computer is healthy or already gets sick.

If SMART reports give the results of a failure, it’s to make a replacement and then transfer all your data before the drive completely gets corrupted.

In this Windows 10 guide, will show you the available methods to check SMART so that you can know if your hard drive is still healthy or is on the edge of hardware failure without the need for using third-party apps.

Use Command Prompt to check SMART

There are two ways you can check the SMART status of your hard drive to determine if hard drives are causing the problem.

Check drive status

If you want to check the SMART status through Command-line utility, simply follow these steps below:

  • Click on Start menu
  • Type in and search for Command Prompt, right-click on the result and run it as
  • In cmd windows, enter the following command to check whether your hard drive is falling:
wmic diskdrive get status
  • Confirm the result under the “Status” column.

If the status is OK, it means everything still works file. If the result is “bad,” or “caution,” there is a chance your hard drive is suffering a failure.

Check the drive predictive failure

You want to check whether your hard drive is failing or not, follow theses tép below to check the prediction failure status:

  • Click on Start menu
  • Type in and search for Command Prompt. Next, right-click on the result and run it as
  • Enter the following commands if your hard drive is getting corrupted:

wmic /namespace:\\root\wmi path MSStorageDriver_FailurePredictStatus
  • If the status says FALSE, it means your drive is working well.

If the result is True for “PredictFailure,” SMART is predicting the failure of the hard drive. You will also get a value different from 0 in Reason column. In this case, you should contact your manufacturer to ask for the code since the value varies on the vendor.

Use Powershell to check the hard drive failure

Powershell is similar to Command Prompt when you can use it to check the SMART reports. Simply follow these steps below to do so:

  • Click onStart menu
  • Type in and search for PowerShell, right-click on the result and run it as administrator.
  • Now, enter the following command to check whether your hard drive is falling:

Get-WmiObject -namespace root\wmi –class

MSStorageDriver_FailurePredictStatus
  • Finally, confirm the PredictFailure values. If it’s FALSE, the hard drive is still healthy.

If the result is True for “PredictFailure,” your hard drive is going to get the failure. If you see the value bigger then 0 in the Reason field, you should contact the manufacturer to understand the code since the value is different from the vendor.

Use Performance Monitor to check whether the drive is falling

Another way to check SMART information is to use the Performance Monitor app on your Windows computer. To check the status of your hard drive failure status, follow these steps:

  • Click on Start menu
  • Look for Performance Monitor and double click on it.
  • Click on Data Collector Sets section.
  • ChooseSystem sub-branch.
  • Right-click on System Diagnostics and select Start
  • Click on Reports option and select System.
  • Click on System Diagnostics.
  • Choose the diagnostic report. In the “Warnings” section, click on the plus icon next to Disk Checks.

Finally, confirm the “SMART Predict Failure” value. If “Failed” value is 0 and “Description” is Passed, then your hard drive is still working fine.

Once you completed the following steps you can find out whether the hard drive on your Windows 10 computer is still healthy or gets failure.
