Touch ID fingerprint sensor in iPhone/iPad and even Mac is a security feature, but it might sometimes go wrong without any reason. Here are some troubleshooting fixes if Touch ID isn’t working.

Many iOS devices and later models of MacBook have TouchID, which is a great security feature. But, sometimes it still goes wrong. So, what should you do if Touch ID on your iDevice suddenly cannot recognize your fingerprints?

If you had set up your fingerprint sensor before and it had worked fine previously, then the chances are that fixing TouchID. In this post, we’ll walk you through a series of easy troubleshooting steps so that you should know what to do if your Touch ID fingerprint sensor on your iOS device isn’t working.

If Touch ID doesn’t work from the first time you unbox your iPhone/iPad, you should make a Genius appointment at the Apple Store to have a check. It’s possible that the component is faulty and you need a replacement.

Clean the Touch ID

The first thing to fix an unresponsive fingerprint scanner is cleaning the Touch ID sensor. If there’s dirt or grime on the Home button, your iPhone/iPad or Mac will have difficulty in confirming whether it’s your fingerprint or not. You can use a lint-free cloth to clean up the Home button.

Update iOS (or macOS)

If cleaning the sensor did not help you, it’s worth updating iPhone or iPad system to the latest version. To check it, simply go to Settings > General > Software Update.

Apple usually releases iOS updates to get rid of the existing bugs, improve performance, and the fingerprint reading speed could be part of the improvements. At the time of writing, the latest IOS update 12.3.2.

If you are encountering trouble with the Touch ID fingerprint scanner on your MacBook Pro, you should check for a MacOS update. Simply click on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then choose About This Mac. Then, select Software Update.

Position your finger correctly

You are recommended to cover the entirely Home button when using the fingerprint sensor. Make sure that you don’t tap quickly or press down hard on the Home button, and keep your finger while it’s being scanned. The process just takes a second or two.

After you have got the hang of this, it’ll be second nature.

Case problems

Cases and covers protecting your iPhone/iPad can have cutouts for the Home button, but sometimes a cutout is tighter than normal. So you should check if part of the case material is blocking your fingerprint. In this case, you should remove the case or find another new one.

Enable Touch ID Unlock

On your iOS device, head to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Touch ID and make sure to enable iPhone Unlock feature. If you want to use your fingerprint for purchasing items in iTunes and the App Store, you need to toggle on iTunes & App Store here.

Add more fingerprint

Another thing you should try to fix the Touch ID issue is to add more fingerprints. iPhone/iPad devices allow users to add up to 5 fingerprints, and you can use any one of them to unlock your device.

To add more fingerprints, just head to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and select Touch ID.

Add cold-weather fingerprints

That sounds a little stupid, but cold weather might change your fingerprints and sometimes can confuse a fingerprint scanner. Your skin might be dried out in the winter and chafed skin is common at this time of year.

Due to this reason, if issues with Touch ID appear to be bad when the thermometer drops, and you have still a leftover fingerprint slot to spare, you should re-register your fingerprints for cold weather. All you need is to enter the fingerprints as normal, but make sure to do it when the weather and your fingers are mostly cold.

If you deal with the cold, then it’s recommended to keep the ‘warm weather’ versions of those fingerprints, so that it still works fine when you are in a warm place like your hone, for instance. The similar prints could not interfere with each other, and they just have two of the options Touch ID is looking for.

Register a fingerprint again

If a particular finger that’s previously registered isn’t working, you can register it again. Simply head to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Touch ID  and tap on Edit. From there, you can delete a fingerprint, and then follow the onscreen instruction to add a new one. It will replace the old print.

To find the faulty fingerprint, just hold your finger over the scanner and check if the recorded fingerprints are highlighted or not.

Clean your fingers

Your Home button is squeaky clean, but that it does not mean your fingers as well. All thing things such as moisture, lotions, sweat, oils can have a bad effect on fingerprint recognition. In addition, exercising, showering, swimming can also reduce the accuracy of the Touch ID. We do not advise you about these activities.
