iPhone Is Not Ringing? How To Fix It

You are receiving a phone call, but due to some reasons, your iPhone is not ringing. You are certain that your phone is not set to mute and the volume is not the lowest level. So, what could have prevented your iPhone from ringing for incoming call alerts? You can find the answer in this post. If you are looking for some help, I recommend you to read further.

If an iPhone that doesn’t ring might be encountering some software glitches or sometimes, its audio components like speakers do not work. You can follow this tutorial to determine whether or not the problem is related to software issues or hardware damage.

Before taking your phone to a Service Center, try the following procedures to eliminate software-related factors, causing your iPhone not to ring for incoming call alerts. Make sure to check your phone after applying each method to find out if the problem is already fixed. If not, proceed to the next method.

Solution 1: Toggle the ringer switch off and back on

The first thing you should do is to check the physical ringer switch on your phone. You can find it on the upper-left side. Try to toggle the switch up or down. If the orange bar shows up, it means your iPhone is already set to mute. In this case, it will not ring or play alerts or any sound effects for some of your apps.

  • To re-enable sound/audio functions, simply flip the switch up to change it to Ring mode.

The next thing is to adjust the volume level on your phone. There is a chance that you have accidentally set the volume to low or lowest level, so you cannot hear your iPhone ring for incoming calls alerts.

The volume level can be adjusted just by using the physical volume buttons, through the Control Center and through Volume settings. You can also ask Siri to adjust the volume based on your preferences.

  • To adjust the volume level using the physical buttons, just press the Volume Up key to raise the sound level and press Volume Down key to reduce.
  • To adjust the volume using Siri, you can simply say turn up the volume” or turn down the volume” and Siri will do your request. Make sure to speak out the words clearly so that Siri can process your request.
  • To adjust the volume from Control Center, simply open it up and you will find the Volume icon. From there, just drag the Volume slider left or right. Adjusting the volume level from Control Center can be done even when your iPhone screen is locked or when you are using apps.

If you want to adjust the volume directly via settings, follow these steps below:

  1. OpenSettings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap on Sounds & Haptics or Sounds option
  3. ToggleChange with Buttons option on or off.

Once you make adjustments to the volume settings, restart your iPhone to apply the recent changes. A simple reset also helps get rid of minor software glitches, which have caused your iPhone audio system or phone app not to work. If your phone is still not ringing afterward, you need to troubleshoot further and eliminate other factors.

Solution 2: Disconnect your iPhone from paired Bluetooth devices

Another possible reason that your iPhone is not ringing for incoming phone calls is that its sound is routed to a Bluetooth speaker or headset. To ensure this not the main cause of the problem, you should disconnect your phone from paired Bluetooth accessories or just disable Bluetooth feature. Here’s what to do then:

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on Bluetooth.
  3. Toggle the switch to turn Bluetooth off, if it’s turned on.

To make sure that your iPhone won’t automatically connect to a Bluetooth-enabled accessory like headsets or speakers, better yet forget these devices from your phone.

To forget Bluetooth devices from your iPhone, simply follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, launch Settings app
  2. Choose Bluetooth, and then enable it to see the list of Bluetooth devices that are available.
  3. Tap on the small letter “i” icon next to Bluetooth device you want to
  4. Tap on Forget This Device and tap on the popup to confirm deleting the selected Bluetooth device.

Once done, reboot your iPhone to refresh it and try making a call with a different phone to test if your iPhone is already ringing.

Solution 3: Disable Do Not Disturb feature

If there a crescent moon-like icon on the status bar of your iPhone, it means that Do Not Disturb feature is already enabled. Once it’s turned on, there is a tendency that it has disabled notification alerts for your incoming calls, so your iPhone will not ring on. In this case, you need to disable Do Not Disturb on your iPhone. To get it done:

  • Open up Control Center and then tap on the moon-like icon to toggle Do Not Disturb on or off.
  • You can ask Siri to disable Do Not Disturb. Simply open Siri assistance and say something like “Turn off Do Not Disturb.”

If you like to do so through the settings menu, here is what to do:

  1. OpenSettings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap on Do Not Disturb.
  3. Toggle the switch to turn off the feature.

You can still enable Do Not Disturb feature, and set some exceptions for incoming calls so that your iPhone can ring on. If your iPhone is not still ringing after this, move on to the next procedure.

Solution 4: Install new updates on your iPhone

Updating your iPhone to the latest iOS version is also one of the good solutions, especially if the problem is related to a software bug or system glitches. If you haven’t yet to set your iPhone to automatically install new updates, you can implement updates manually. To make sure the problem is not caused by a certain app, you should install all pending app updates from the App Store. To do so:

  1. LaunchApp Store from the Home screen.
  2. Tap onUpdates tab and you will see a new screen with a list of apps with pending updates on the screen.
  3. Tap on the Update button next to each application to update it individually.
  4. Select Update All button on the upper part if you want to update all apps simultaneously.

Keep the firmware on your iPhone up-to-date is also recommended. Follow these steps to download and install a new iOS update on your iPhone:

  1. OpenSettings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap on General > Software Update.

There will be an update notification on the screen if a new iOS update is available. Before proceeding, make sure your iPhone has ample storage space, at least 50% leftover battery life and stable Internet access. After that, follow the onscreen instructions to install the update when you’re ready. Once you install the iOS update but your iPhone is still not ringing, you should consider resetting all settings of your iPhone.

Solution 5: Reset all settings on your iPhone

Settings which are not properly configured can also be the main culprit for its sound output. Automatic update that might override is usually the cause. So, if the problem only started after you installed new updates on your iPhone, resetting all settings might be a good solution. The process will not affect any saved data on your phone internal memory, so a permanent data loss is impossible. Here’s how to do so:

  1. Open Settings from the Home screen
  2. Tap on General > Reset.
  3. Choose theReset all settings option
  4. Enter your phone passcode when prompted to proceed.
  5. Tap on the popup to confirm whether you want to reset all settings on your phone.

Your iPhone will start erasing all customized settings and then restore the original options on your device. After the reset, it will reboot itself. After that, you can start re-enabling features that you want to use on your phone. Then check if it still not ringing when you are getting a phone call. Otherwise, move on to the last solution.

Last option: Factory reset your iPhone

If none of the mentioned methods above helped you and you have already run out of options, you should opt for a resort that is a factory reset to erase and restore your iPhone to its factory defaults. Complex system errors that caused the audio system on your phone to stop working will be cleared out during the process. The only downside here is that all your saved data on your phone internal memory will be deleted, meaning that it results to a permanent data loss. Thus, creating a backup to iCloud or through iTunes software is necessary. Should you wish to proceed, back up your critical files first and then follow these steps below when you’re all set:

  1. OpenSettings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap onGeneral > Reset.
  3. Select the second Erase all content and settings option
  4. Enter your phone passcode when asked to continue.
  5. Tap on the popup menu to confirm factory resetting your iPhone.

Now, wait for your iPhone to complete wiping all the data on your phone and then restarts when it’s done. After booting up, you can use finish the startup wizard to set up your iPhone as new or restore from a backup

You can also use iTunes software to manually restore factory defaults settings on your phone or restore your device to a previous iOS backup via iTunes if the problem only happened after installing updates.

If you want to proceed with an iTunes reset, prepare a computer first. The computer needs to have the latest version of iTunes and a stable Internet connection access so that iTunes can access the Apple server to download the latest iOS version for your iPhone. When you’re all set, plug your phone into the computer using a certificated Lightning cable, launch iTunes on the computer and wait for it to sync your iPhone. Click on your iPhone icon when it shows up in iTunes and then follows the onscreen prompts to start restoring your device.

What to do if your iPhone is still not ringing after trying all methods?

You could not fix the problem on your iPhone after performing all the methods, there is a chance you’re encountering a hardware issue. This is likely the case if you actually dropped your phone or make it wet previously. Some of the audio components have been damaged and they need some repair or replacement.

To eliminate hardware damage from the underlying cause, you should take your iPhone to the nearest Apple service center and let an authorized technician have a check for the hardware components. If your iPhone is still under the warranty, you should contact your carrier first so that they can give you advice on how to avail for warranty instead. If it’s a persistent post-update issue, you can report the problem to Apple Support for further assistance.
