15 Tips And Tricks For iPhone XS, XS Max, XR

For a decade, the traditional Home button was only the center navigation of every iOS devices. No matter what you were doing, pressing on Home once or twice would bring you exactly to Home screen. Depending on how often you press on it, the Home button would help you do a number of useful things for you, opening up from Siri or Apple Pay to the app switcher and accessibility menu. It has become a convenience key all in one for a long time. But now, on iPhone XS, it’s gone.

In order to make more space for that edge-to-edge display, Apple has officially replaced the Home button with a gesture-based navigation area, which is magnificently fun. In this post, we’d like to share with you 16 tips and tricks for your new iPhone XS.

How to the Home screen on iPhone XS

Although the Home button is already gone, you still need to return Home in most cases, from the Lock screen to the Home screen, from widget screens to the main Home screen, from apps to the Home screen. Fortunately, a Home gesture has replaced the Home button and you can do it with ease.

  1. Touch your finger to the gesture area at the bottom of your iPhone XS display.
  2. Flick it up. (simply a short drag and then release, you don’t need to keep your finger down.)

It’s almost similar to what you usually do to open up Control Center, and it will become natural quickly

How to switch between apps on iPhone XS

On the previous iPhone models from iPhone 8 Plus and older, you need to launch the fast app switcher and swipe back and forth between apps. However, on iPhone XS, you can even do it even faster. All you need is to literally just swipe. While there are a few older apps causing you hiccups, it’ll just work most of the time.

  1. Simply touch your finger to the gesture area at the bottom of your iPhone XS display.
  2. Swipe from left to right to return to the previous app or swipe from right to left to go back to the next app.

In case you get interrupted, the last app running on your iPhone will become the most recent app and you can only swipe back from it, not forward anymore.

How to open up the multitasking fast app switcher

If you want to quickly swipe back and forth via several apps, you can also do that easily. Without double-pressing the Home button or using the 3D Touch to open up the multitasking interface as well as fast app switcher, you simply use the new gesture on your iPhone XS. To do so:

  1. Touch your finger to the gesture area locating at the bottom of your iPhone XS display.
  2. Next, lightly swipe it up. Don’t flick on it. Just put your finger on the screen until there is a short way up.

You may need a few tries to get right, and you can also exaggerate the movements at the speed if you need at first. After a few tries, your gesture is lightning fast.

How to force quit apps on iPhone XS

Force quitting apps is so easy. You can easily force quit all the apps just with a simple swipe up from the app switcher tray.

  1. Touch your finger to the gesture area at the bottom of your iPhone XS display.
  2. Slightly swipe it up.
  3. Don’t lift your finger up immediately as that will open Home. Just pause there
  4. Lift up your finger.
  5. Simply swipe up on an app card.

When you are in killing mode, you can force quit as many apps as you like. But you should note that iOS will prefer to manage apps for you, so you just kill them if they deserve to die.

How to enter Reachability mode on iPhone XS

Unlike other gestures, you need to set it up first.

  1. Open Settings app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on General and select Accessibility.
  3. Toggle the switch next to Reachability to On.

Once your set it up:

  1. Touch your finger to the gesture area at the bottom of your iPhone XS display.
  2. Swipe it down.

You can also swipe down from the top right of Reachability to open up Control Center.

How to access Control Center on iPhone XS

Since doing a swipe up will invoke the multitasking fast app switcher, Control Center had to be from the bottom to the top. So, Notification Center is now limited to swiping down from the top left horn, while Control Center gets the right horn.

  1. Touch your finger to the right “horn”.
  2. Swipe it down.

Swiping down from the top right of Reachability will also bring up Control Center.
