Vivo NEX Launched In China, Featuring In-Display Fingerprint Reader

After a lot of leaks, and rumors about key hardware specs as well as software features, the much-awaited Vivo NEX has officially been introduced in Shanghai, China. The phone is the production version of a concept phone that the Chinese company previously revealed at the MWC event earlier this. Unlike most of the other smartphones currently on the market, the NEX removes the notch entirely, and according to Vivo, the screen takes up a 91.2% screen-to-body ratio.

There have been three different variants of the Vivo NEX, but two top-end variants (NEX S) are the same device and come with identical specs, except for the amount of internal storage. But the Lite variant (NEX A) is a different device and is equipped with a lower-end processor under the hood. While the premium versions are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, the lite version just runs on the Snapdragon 710 SOC, which can be found in the recently-launched Mi 8 SE from Xiaomi.

Vivo NEX Hardware Specs

All three models of the Vivo NEX will flaunt a 6.59-inch Full HD+ screen with Super AMOLED panel and a 19.3:9 aspect ratio. Two premium models are powered by the highest-end chipset in the Android world, Snapdragon 845 SoC, along with 8GB of RAM. The top-end model will be packed with 256GB of built-in storage, while the other one just comes with 128GB ROM.

In the camera department, all three Vivo NEX variants feature a dual 12MP (Sony IMX363 sensor) + 5MP camera setup at the back. The primary sensor comes with 4-axis OIS, which is paired with a f/1.8 aperture lens, while the latter one also features 4-axis OIS with a f/2.4 lens. Meanwhile, in terms of front-facing camera, there is is an 8MP snapper with a f/2.0 aperture lens. All three Vivo NEX models carry a 4,000mAh battery capacity and are pre-installed Android 8.1 Oreo-based Funtouch OS 4.0 out of box. Interestingly, Vivo still keeps the headphone jack on their new phones alongside other connectivity options like USB- C port.

Apart from the aforementioned full-screen display, two premium models also come with a range of new and exciting features, such as a retractable selfie camera popping up at the press of a button, an in-display fingerprint reader that was seen on the company’s X21 UD released earlier this year. Moreover, there is also a piezoelectric speaker like the Xiaomi Mi Mix, and especially the Jovi voice assistant, which is the combination of Bixby and Google Lens. According to Vivo, it’s not entirely like Bixby Vision.

Pricing and Availability

The Vivo NEX is priced at 4,998 yuan (around $780) for 256GB variant and 4,498 yuan (around $702) for 128GB versions. Meanwhile, the Lite version running Snapdragon 710 is set a price-tag of 3,898 yuan (around $608). Three devices will officially hit stores in China on June 23rd. However, there is no information about if they will be released for other markets.
