Ok, A secret conversation in facebook Messenger is conversation that are secured with end-to-end encryption, this means your conversation which are intended just for you and the other person you are chatting with will not be seen by any other third parties including Facebook, even Mark Zuckerberg himself can’t see a letter of it. However, the other person you are chatting with could share it with other party, like sharing a screenshot of the conversation.
With secret conversations, you can send messages, pictures and stickers. But, secret conversations don’t support group messages, gifs, videos, voice or video calling or payments.
You can as well set a timer to have your messages disappear from the conversation but apparently not from the other person chat record, only from yours.
How do I start a secret conversation?
- Click on the name of the person you want to start a secret conversation with.
- Click on the option button located at the upper right side of the screen.
- Scroll down and click on secret conversation.
- Now, you are good to go!
How to know if your conversation is actually encrypted
If you are in secret conversation with someone, both of you will have a device key that you can compare to verify that the messages are end-to-end encrypted.
- Tap Device Keys
- Compare your device key with the other person’s device key to make sure that they match. If they match, your conversation is encrypted
Though your messages will be encrypted regardless you compare device keys or not.

Unfortunately, Secret conversation features is currently only available in the Messenger app on iOS and Android. So, they won’t appear on Facebook chat or messenger.com.
