If you upgrade your PC from a previous version of Windows to Windows 10, then you will surely see this folder “Windows.old” you might be wondering how the hell did it get there, anyway the folder it’s not there because you did something wrong and it’s not just on your PC, it’s normal and this has been around on previous Windows before Windows 10.
What Is Windows.old Folder?
Windows.old folder is created on your Computer when you upgrade from one version of Windows to another. Have you ever wonder what happened to the previous version of the OS? Your old OS is never erased but rather save to a folder on your Computer, the Windows.old folder which actually contains all the files and data from your previous Windows installation which includes Windows system files of installed programs, settings and files.
The main reason for keeping this folder is that it can be used to restore your system to the old version of Windows just in case you don’t like the new version and decide to downgrade to . And also if a file is missing or not successfully copied to the new OS, you can search for the file in the Windows.old folder.
This same folder is where your Windows refers to in case something went wrong during upgrading of the new OS, i experienced an issue when installing Windows 10 update, my laptop unexpectedly shut down, thanks to the awkward brightness when upgrading that drain my laptop battery, but instead of loading the corrupted Windows 10, it load the previous OS which is Windows 8.1, it load the previous OS perfectly without losing any file, then I later upgrade my Windows to Windows 10 correctly, I wonder what would have happened if there is no Windows.old folder.
How to Delete Windows.old Folder to Free Up Space
The amazing part is that Windows will automatically delete the Windows.old folder to free up space after a month, you can decide not to wait for that delete the Windows.old folder to free some space,
If you try to delete the Windows.old folder from File Explorer like any other normal folder, you’ll receive an error message in which you can bypass by modifying the permission but there is no need for that, follow the steps carefully to safely delete the Windows.old folder
– Go to Disk Cleanup. (On Windows 10, click the Start button and search for “Disk cleanup” in the Start menu, then open Disk cleanup. Or you can also right click on C:// drive, click on properties and select disk cleanup)
– Click on “Clean up system files” ,scroll down until you see “Previous Windows installation(s)” appear in the list which will display the space being occupied by it.
– Check that option and use Disk Cleanup to delete the previous Windows system files.
This will free lot of space on your computer.
There is no side effect of deleting Windows.old folder in as much as you like the current Windows 10 and don’t plan to downgrade to previous windows.
